Abstract:   (12 Views)
Aquaponics integrates recirculating aquaculture and hydroponic plant cultivation, enabling efficient nutrient recycling and reduced water consumption while contributing to household food security. The present study evaluated the production performance of a small-scale household aquaponics system consisting of a 1-m³ fish-rearing tank and a 3-m² plant-growing area over two consecutive six-month production cycles. The production of red hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus × O. mossambicus) reached 26.6 and 25.0 kg during the first and second production cycles, respectively. Plant yields included 10.7 and 1.8 kg of peppermint (Mentha piperita), 9.0 and 16.7 kg of celery (Apium graveolens), and 2.6 kg m⁻² of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum). Annual projections indicated that the system could produce more than 50 kg of tilapia together with substantial quantities of fresh vegetables. The results demonstrate that small-scale household aquaponics systems can simultaneously produce fish and vegetables within a limited space while promoting efficient resource utilization. Such systems represent a sustainable approach to household food production and may contribute to improved food security, reduced water use, and diversified livelihoods at the household level.
